IACT observations of gamma-ray bursts: prospects for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
Gamma rays at rest frame energies as high as 90 GeV have been reported from
gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). There is
considerable hope that a confirmed GRB detection will be possible with the
upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), which will have a larger effective
area and better low-energy sensitivity than current-generation imaging
atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). To estimate the likelihood of such a
detection, we have developed a phenomenological model for GRB emission between
1 GeV and 1 TeV that is motivated by the high-energy GRB detections of
Fermi-LAT, and allows us to extrapolate the statistics of GRBs seen by lower
energy instruments such as the Swift-BAT and BATSE on the Compton Gamma-ray
Observatory. We show a number of statistics for detected GRBs, and describe how
the detectability of GRBs with CTA could vary based on a number of parameters,
such as the typical observation delay between the burst onset and the start of
ground observations. We also consider the possibility of using GBM on Fermi as
a finder of GRBs for rapid ground follow-up. While the uncertainty of GBM
localization is problematic, the small field-of-view for IACTs can potentially
be overcome by scanning over the GBM error region. Overall, our results
indicate that CTA should be able to detect one GRB every 20 to 30 months with
our baseline instrument model, assuming consistently rapid pursuit of GRB
alerts, and provided that spectral breaks below 100 GeV are not a common
feature of the bright GRB population. With a more optimistic instrument model,

Focused Deterrence and the Prevention of Violent Gun Injuries: Practice, Theoretical Principles, and Scientific Evidence
Focused deterrence strategies are a relatively new addition to a growing portfolio of evidence-based violent gun injury prevention practices available to policy makers and practitioners. These strategies seek to change offender behavior by understanding the underlying violence-producing dynamics and conditions that sustain recurring violent gun injury problems and by implementing a blended strategy of law enforcement, community mobilization, and social service actions. Consistent with documented public health practice, the focused deterrence approach identifies underlying risk factors and causes of recurring violent gun injury problems, develops tailored responses to these underlying conditions, and measures the impact of implemented interventions. This article reviews the practice, theoretical principles, and evaluation evidence on focused deterrence strategies. Although more rigorous randomized studies are needed, the available empirical evidence suggests that these strategies generate noteworthy gun violence reduction impacts and should be part of a broader portfolio of violence prevention strategies available to policy makers and practitioners
Heavy quark density in N=4 SYM: from hedgehog to Lifshitz spacetimes
We study the effect of an order N^2 density of heavy quarks in strongly
coupled N=4 SUSY Yang-Mills theory in the large N limit. This is achieved in
the type IIB supergravity dual by introducing a uniformly smeared density of
macroscopic string sources stretching to the boundary of AdS_5 x S^5. The
backreacted system exhibits a flow from an AdS_5 "hedgehog" geometry to a
scaling Lifshitz-like solution Lif_5 x S^5 with dynamical critical exponent
z=7, wherein the scaling symmetry is broken by a logarithmic running dilaton.
We find an exact black brane solution within the scaling regime which describes

Bosonic excitations of the AdS4 Reissner-Nordstrom black hole
We study the long-lived modes of the charge density and energy density
correlators in the strongly-coupled, finite density field theory dual to the
AdS4 Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. For small momenta q<<\mu, these correlators
contain a pole due to sound propagation, as well as a pole due to a long-lived,
purely imaginary mode analogous to the \mu=0 hydrodynamic charge diffusion
mode. As the temperature is raised in the range T\lesssim\mu, the sound
attenuation shows no significant temperature dependence. When T\gtrsim\mu, it
quickly approaches the \mu=0 hydrodynamic result where it decreases like 1/T.
It does not share any of the temperature-dependent properties of the 'zero
sound' of Landau Fermi liquids observed in the strongly-coupled D3/D7 field
theory. For such small momenta, the energy density spectral function is
dominated by the sound mode at all temperatures, whereas the charge density
spectral function undergoes a crossover from being dominated by the sound mode
at low temperatures to being dominated by the diffusion mode when T \mu^2/q.
This crossover occurs due to the changing residue at each pole. We also compute
the momentum dependence of these spectral functions and their corresponding
long-lived poles at fixed, low temperatures T<<\mu.Comment: 33 pages, 21 figures, 6 animation
Outcome measurement in functional neurological disorder: a systematic review and recommendations.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify existing outcome measures for functional neurological disorder (FND), to inform the development of recommendations and to guide future research on FND outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify existing FND-specific outcome measures and the most common measurement domains and measures in previous treatment studies. Searches of Embase, MEDLINE and PsycINFO were conducted between January 1965 and June 2019. The findings were discussed during two international meetings of the FND-Core Outcome Measures group. RESULTS: Five FND-specific measures were identified-three clinician-rated and two patient-rated-but their measurement properties have not been rigorously evaluated. No single measure was identified for use across the range of FND symptoms in adults. Across randomised controlled trials (k=40) and observational treatment studies (k=40), outcome measures most often assessed core FND symptom change. Other domains measured commonly were additional physical and psychological symptoms, life impact (ie, quality of life, disability and general functioning) and health economics/cost-utility (eg, healthcare resource use and quality-adjusted life years). CONCLUSIONS: There are few well-validated FND-specific outcome measures. Thus, at present, we recommend that existing outcome measures, known to be reliable, valid and responsive in FND or closely related populations, are used to capture key outcome domains. Increased consistency in outcome measurement will facilitate comparison of treatment effects across FND symptom types and treatment modalities. Future work needs to more rigorously validate outcome measures used in this population
Discerning the ancestry of European Americans in genetic association studies
European Americans are often treated as a homogeneous group, but in fact form a structured population due to historical immigration of diverse source populations. Discerning the ancestry of European Americans genotyped in association studies is important in order to prevent false-positive or false-negative associations due to population stratification and to identify genetic variants whose contribution to disease risk differs across European ancestries. Here, we investigate empirical patterns of population structure in European Americans, analyzing 4,198 samples from four genome-wide association studies to show that components roughly corresponding to northwest European, southeast European, and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry are the main sources of European American population structure. Building on this insight, we constructed a panel of 300 validated markers that are highly informative for distinguishing these ancestries. We demonstrate that this panel of markers can be used to correct for stratification in association studies that do not generate dense genotype data
Supergravity Solutions from Floating Branes
We solve the equations of motion of five-dimensional ungauged supergravity
coupled to three U(1) gauge fields using a floating-brane Ansatz in which the
electric potentials are directly related to the gravitational warp factors. We
find a new class of non-BPS solutions, that can be obtained linearly starting
from an Euclidean four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell base. This class - the
largest known so far - reduces to the BPS and almost-BPS solutions in certain
limits. We solve the equations explicitly when the base space is given by the
Israel-Wilson metric, and obtain solutions describing non-BPS D6 and anti-D6
branes kept in equilibrium by flux. We also examine the action of spectral flow
on solutions with an Israel-Wilson base and show that it relates these
solutions to almost-BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figur
Utilizing electronic health records to predict acute kidney injury risk and outcomes: Workgroup statements from the 15<sup>th</sup> ADQI Consensus Conference
The data contained within the electronic health record (EHR) is "big" from the standpoint of volume, velocity, and variety. These circumstances and the pervasive trend towards EHR adoption have sparked interest in applying big data predictive analytic techniques to EHR data. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a condition well suited to prediction and risk forecasting; not only does the consensus definition for AKI allow temporal anchoring of events, but no treatments exist once AKI develops, underscoring the importance of early identification and prevention. The Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) convened a group of key opinion leaders and stakeholders to consider how best to approach AKI research and care in the "Big Data" era. This manuscript addresses the core elements of AKI risk prediction and outlines potential pathways and processes. Unsuspected pulmonary alveolar proteinosis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Diffuse lung infiltrates are a common finding in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and causes range from infectious processes to malignancies or interstitial lung diseases. Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is a rare pulmonary disorder rarely reported in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Secondary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is associated with conditions involving functional impairment or reduced numbers of alveolar macrophages. It can be caused by hematologic malignancies, inhalation of toxic dust, fumes or gases, infectious or pharmacologic immunosuppression, or lysinuric protein intolerance.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 42-year-old African American man infected with human immunodeficiency virus was admitted with chronic respiratory symptoms and diffuse pulmonary infiltrates. Chest computed tomography revealed bilateral spontaneous pneumothoraces, for which he required bilateral chest tubes. Initial laboratory investigations did not reveal any contributory conditions. Histological examination of a lung biopsy taken during video-assisted thoracoscopy showed pulmonary alveolar proteinosis concurrent with cytomegalovirus pneumonitis. After ganciclovir treatment, our patient showed radiologic and clinical improvement.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The differential diagnosis for patients with immunosuppression and lung infiltrates requires extensive investigations. As pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is rare, the diagnosis can be easily missed. Our case highlights the importance of invasive investigations and histology in the management of patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus and pulmonary disease who do not respond to empiric therapy.</p
The Suppressor of AAC2 Lethality SAL1 Modulates Sensitivity of Heterologously Expressed Artemia ADP/ATP Carrier to Bongkrekate in Yeast
The ADP/ATP carrier protein (AAC) expressed in Artemia franciscana is refractory to bongkrekate. We generated two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae where AAC1 and AAC3 were inactivated and the AAC2 isoform was replaced with Artemia AAC containing a hemagglutinin tag (ArAAC-HA). In one of the strains the suppressor of ÎAAC2 lethality, SAL1, was also inactivated but a plasmid coding for yeast AAC2 was included, because the ArAACÎsal1Î strain was lethal. In both strains ArAAC-HA was expressed and correctly localized to the mitochondria. Peptide sequencing of ArAAC expressed in Artemia and that expressed in the modified yeasts revealed identical amino acid sequences. The isolated mitochondria from both modified strains developed 85% of the membrane potential attained by mitochondria of control strains, and addition of ADP yielded bongkrekate-sensitive depolarizations implying acquired sensitivity of ArAAC-mediated adenine nucleotide exchange to this poison, independent from SAL1. However, growth of ArAAC-expressing yeasts in glycerol-containing media was arrested by bongkrekate only in the presence of SAL1. We conclude that the mitochondrial environment of yeasts relying on respiratory growth conferred sensitivity of ArAAC to bongkrekate in a SAL1-dependent manner. © 2013 Wysocka-Kapcinska et al
